Project Description

In April 2003, the VPA entered into to a cost-sharing agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to dredge the inbound element of the Federal Navigation Channel into Norfolk Harbor from 45 to 50 feet. This project is crucial for maintaining competitive advantage and meeting the needs of the growing fleet of container ships calling at the Port of Virginia. The channel will be dredged in three stages beginning with the Thimble Shoals Channel followed by the Norfolk Harbor and Atlantic Ocean Channels respectively. Total cost of the project is estimated at $35 million.
