Hampton Boulevard Grade Separation

Last Updated: March 7, 2012

Project Description

The Hampton Boulevard Grade Separation Project is designed to improve safety and minimize traffic disruptions due to an existing railroad crossing in the vicinity of Hampton Boulevard adjacent to the Norfolk International Terminals (NIT). It will not only eliminate traffic stoppages when trains arrive and depart NIT, but will also allow freight trains unhindered access to NIT to accomodate increasing amounts of cargo moving to and from the terminal by rail.

The project will provide a six-lane detour roadway including an adequate median for turn lanes and access into the U.S. Navy’s Gate Six, while maintaining the same capacity as the existing Hampton Boulevard.

Two new bridges will be constructed as part of the project, which will also include improved roadway lighting, signals, drainage, landscaping, bike lanes, curbs, gutters and sidewalks. Therefore, construction is expected to pose only minor disruptions to traffic.

This project is the first step in the I-564 Intermodal Connector - a transportation initiative to address a set of unique regional challenges including improving efficiencies in cargo movement and enhancing military readiness.

Current Estimated Construction Cost: $38,000,000
